The abdominoplasty and its variant, the mini-abdominoplasty, occupy the third place among the most performed plastic surgeries in Brazil; there are about 80 thousand procedures performed every year. Natural aging, heredity, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can cause aesthetic and functional changes in the abdomen, making this procedure necessary. Both men and women may have an indication for a mini-abdominoplasty or an abdominoplasty.
The excess skin in the lower abdomen associated with diastasis of the straight abdominal muscle (separation, excessive distancing in the midline of the abdomen) is the change that most troubles patients who seek this surgery where these changes are corrected. The objective and major recommendation of abdominoplasty is the treatment of muscle weakness (diastasis) and skin flaccidity of the abdomen; the excess of localized fat is treated with another procedure, namely liposuction.
The mini abdominoplasty is recommended for a smaller percentage of patients because this surgery treats muscular diastasis and small flaccidity below the navel, that is, it is not suitable for moderate to large flaccidity and for cases with flaccidity above the navel. The scar is a little smaller than that of the conventional abdominoplasty and larger than the scar of a common c-section. The navel scar is not required.
It is important to always keep in mind that this is not a weight loss procedure. Following the recommendation of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), no more than 7% of the patient's body fat should be removed. Safety always comes first and, therefore, we must prepare for surgery by getting as close as possible to our ideal weight before the surgical procedure. Definition Liposuction or HD Lipoabdominoplasty is the combination of the concepts of definition liposuction associated with abdominoplasty, thus generating more elegant results and with less "operated belly" appearance.
In this surgery we remove the excess skin from the abdomen, treat the muscular weakness of the abdominal wall (diastasis, umbilical hernia), and liposuction the excess localized fat, defining and enhancing the existing muscular contours.
